In those reports on N.Korean's nuclear ambition, i often come across the phrase "nuclear brinkmanship". And due to my insufficient grasp of the english language, i need wikipedia to enlighten me on this doubt.

Hence, brinkmanship means

"policy or practice of pushing a dangerous situation to the brink of disaster in order to achieve the most advantageous outcome. It occurs in international politics, foreign policy and (in contemporary settings) in military strategy involving the threatened use of nuclear weapons.

This maneuver of pushing a situation to the brink succeeds by forcing the opposition to back down and make concessions. This might be achieved through diplomatic maneuvers by creating the impression that one is willing to use extreme methods rather than concede. During the Cold War, the threat of nuclear force was often used as such an escalating measure."

Now i know this word is most apt in describing the n.korean situation at the moment.

Currently into the study of what exactly is conservatism and liberalism in US terms. More on that later...

I don't know if you can count buying a cd as breaking the rule of the hiatus game. No, not game, im serious about it, hence it's more than playin a game. But i guess buying a cd's not counted since Dreamgirls was really nice, and hence buying the movie soundtrack was something typical of a movie fan.

That's it, a proper excuse for the shopaholic.

Anyway, i'd say dreamgirls is of a very different genre that you can deem academy-worthy. But it is. Although i don't think many appreciate this fact, since there were some teenagers who left the cinema halfway through the movie. A pity that is. But i don't think everyone's gonna love this movie, though i do! And it's a movie that's good primarily because of the music.

Anyway, i'm gonna take the Sentosa express tomorrow. Hurray to a first!

Some after-thoughts after the read and some excerpts that were superb:

"People would have gone absolutely wild if the astronomers had discovered another living planet. They just don't let themselves be amazed by their own."

Yes, our existence alone is something we should be taken aback by.

"A joker is a little fool who is different from everyone else. He's not a club, diamond, heart, or spade. He's not an eight or a nine, a King or a Jack. He is an outsider. He is placed in the same pack as the other cards, but he doesn't belong there. Therefore, he can be removed without anyone missing him."

The primary reason why i've began collecting jokers. I interpret the joker as a thinker and one who does not belong to the colony because he asks questions and seeks clarifications about his existence.

"Our lives are part of an unique adventure. Most of us think the world is 'normal' and are constantly hunting for something abnormal-like angels or Martians. But that is just because we don't realise the world is a mystery."

"If our brain was simple enough for us to understand it, we would be so stupid we wouldn't be able to understand it after all"

This sentence is genius. Pure genius.

"If God really exists, then He's clever at playing Hide-and-Seek with his Creations. Maybe He was frightened when He saw what He'd created. So He ran away from everything. YOu know, it's not easy to tell who got the biggest fright;Adam or the Lord. I think such an act of creation terrifies both parties."

And i like this story told in the story the best:

"A Russian cosmonaut and a Russian brain surgeon were once discussing Christianity. The brain surgeon was Christian but the cosmonaut wasn't. 'I have been to outer space mny times' bragged the cosmonaut, 'but i have never seen any angels.' The brain surgeon stared in amazement, but then he said, 'And i have operated on many intelligent brains, but i have never seen single thought."

Clearly explains the fact that it doesn't mean that something you cannot see with your naked eye does not exist. We don't know too much and hence, we should not be complacent and think we know a lot. Because as Socrates said "One thing only i know and that is that i know nothing."

"A young child sits building sandcastles in a sandbox. It constantly builds something new, something which it treasures for only a moment before it knocks it all down again. In the same way Time has been given a plant to play with. This is where the history of the world is written, this is where the events are engraved-and smoothed over again. This is where life bubbles like in a witch's cauldron. One day we'll be modelled here, too-from the same brittle material as our ancestors. The wind of Time blows through us, carries us and is us-then drops us again. We are conjured up and tricked away. There is always something lying and brewing in anticipation of taking our place. Because we;re not standing on solid ground, we're not even standing on sand-we are sand.

You cannot hide from Time. You can hide from kings and emperors and possibly from God, but you can't hide from Time. Time follows our every move, because everything around us is immersed in this transient element.

Time doesn't pass, and Time doesn't tick. We are the ones who pass and our watches tick.Time eats its way through history as silently and relentlessly as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. It topples great civilisationsm gnaws at ancient monuments, and wolfs down generation after generation. That's why we speak of the "ravages of time".Time chews and chomps-and we are theones between its jaws.

For a fleeting moment, we are part of a furious swarm. He run around on earth as though it was the most obvious thing of all. But everything will disappear. It will disappear and be replaced with new multitudes, because people are always standing in line. Snapes and masks come and go, and new ideas are always popping up. Themes are never repeated, and a composition never shows up twice...There is nothing as complicated and precious as a person-but we are treated like trash.

We skip around on earth like characters in a fairytale. We nod and smile at each other as to say, "Hi there, we're living at the same time, we're in the smae reality-or the same fairy tale..."Isn't that incredible? We're on a planet in the universe, but soon we'll be swept out of orbit again. Abracadabra-and we're gone.

If we had lived in another century, we would have shared our lives with different people. Today we can easily nod and smile and say hello to thousands of our contemporaries "Hi there! How strange we should be living at exactlly the same time" Or perhaps I bump into someone and open and door and shout:"Hi, soul!"

We're done, but we live this only once. We open our arms and declare that we exist, but then we are swept aside and thrust into the depths of history. Because we are disposable. We are part of an eternal masquerade where the masks come and go.

Thoughts don't flow. The philosophers in Athens believed that there was also something which didn't run. Plato called this the "world of ideas". The sandcastles isn't the most important thing. What is most important is the image of the sandcastle which the child has pictured befor it started to build. Why do you think the child knocks the castle down as soon as it is finished?

Have you ever wanted to draw or make something, but you just havent been able to get it right? YOu try over and over agian, without giving up. It is because the image you have in your head is always more complete than the representations you try to form with your hands. It's the same with everythinig we see around us. We think everything around could be better, and it's because all the images inside our heads have come from the world of ieas. That's where we really belong-not down here in the sandbox, where Time snaps at everything we love. There is another world and it was our soul before it lodged itself in a body and it will return there when the body succumbs to the ravages of time.

Our bodies have the same fate as the sandcastles in the sandbox, nothing can be done about it. But we do have something which Time doesn't gnaw through. That's because it doesn't really belong here. We need to look up from everything flowing around us and see what it is all a representation of."

The words in bold are an overall summary you can get from this long excerpt. And the main ideas i was attracted to. But it's better to read everything. I like the author's interpretation of time, it's something i can accept. Pick some ideas and maybe let me know in the tagboard about how you feel. That way, if this theory stands, a fourth dimension must exist.

"Every morning you have gone to work, but you have never been fully awake. Of course, you have seen the sun and the moon, the stars in the sky, and everything that moves, but you haven't really seen it at all. It is different for the Joker, because he was put into the world with a flaw:he sees too deeply and too much."

What a philosophical way to end an old year and start a fresh new year..

Moon is going on a buying hiatus, which means i'll do just window shopping from today onwards till the 16th of next month.

Strictly no clothes, make-up, shoes buying. Anything that's related to fashion, boutiques, wardrobe has to be striked off the list temporarily.

Anyway, my Dad's facing some business problems because of the new second hand dealing ruling. We went to the Licensing Division like more than 2 weeks ago, i gave them a call today and we still have to wait. Now i understand why Jack Neo made that movie. I thought computerised systems were supposed to be more efficient, damn it, why is it so inefficient.

And i asked the person in charge if the letter of notification could be send to our home address instead of the Defu Lane one, she said: "Cannot, is computerised."

Wah Lao, like that no need employ you liao wad, everything computerised. (i'm so angry i cant be bothered to type in proper english). I guess computers are going to take over civil servants soon, then we can watch 我在政府部门的日子续集 next new year.

ARGH.

I'd share some excerpts frm Solitaire Mystery when im in the mood.

Anyway, i doubled as a Saint Andrew's student for a few minutes yesterday:

BAAAAA...

i didn't score the scholarship for sph. BOO HOO.
My heart sank when i saw the email, which means i really must have wanted it.

But i'm still determined to be a journalist. Which mean i might really pursue my dream to go ST instead of zaobao. But i must definitely brush up on my English.

The problem now is Political Science or not? Shucks, that scholarship would mean that i didn't have to think so much. Now, it's time for some serious thinking: whether i should take the risk to do something i would love more.

Haiz.

Wonder whether Jiamin got it. All the best to her sia.

Overall a 'Hang Loose' day today, with some reading done and a movie watched

Dvd watching of Devil Wears Prada was great, because light content means you don't need much of your head. Just the wooing and ahhing over the Jimmy Choos and the "Chanel Boots" haha.

Gosh, i do recognise Mr Valentino himself and spotted Heidi in the fashion crowd. And I know how to tell a Jimmy Choo from a Bata. LOL. Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Shu Uemura are in my dictionary. Now I'd say I'm a real woman, even though I don't care for owning any.

And i read in the papers that women would gladly give up sex for a new wardrobe. Now that's what they call a real population problem comin up soon...wootx

Went for Oliver's birthday party today and gosh, it was cramped. The corridors were cramped, and the flat was too. But Oliver the birthday boy was cute, and that's all that matters. Happy Birthday boy, although the actual one's on the 16th, but nevertheless have fun in the world.....:)

Bacause of the recent influence from The Solitaire's Mystery, i start to doubt the sentence that i usually over-use:
"I'm loving life."

And that is because I'm starting to doubt my belief (see the paradox) in that i'm actually leading a "life".

How should i put it?

The book continually reiterates that someone who truly feels his/her senses tingling, her limbs moving should be one who marvels at the world's and his/her existence in this world.

Despite consciously reminding myself to remind myself of my own unusual existence on this planet, i unconsciously wake up every morning feeling just how i have been feeling these past years. There were no notion of weird disbelief that i actually woke up to this world that im a total stranger to.

I guess that's what you call assimilation into reality. (But what is reality?) I work the functions of every normal human, such that i've lost that most important function: to question the details and the unthinkable, and most importantly, to question my own existence.

No doubt this blog entry would be a huge reminder on my consciousness to register the fact that i should start waking up to new realities every morning. But...But i know i'll wake up tomorrow the way i woke up today

Vicissitude: change/ mutation

Some words i looked up today:
Schadenfreude--basically it means delight at other peoples' misfortunes
Mien- inner state of mind, character worried mien, i tend to link it to the word demeanour
indefatigable--from the word fatigue, meaning seemingly incapable of feeling fatigue
indubitable--from the word doubt, meaning unquestionable

I don't really know whether you should blame it on weak constituition or i should just throw up my hands and say "I'm so DAMN SUAY", because ms moon has fallen sick again. This seems to be a "at least once in 3 mths" occurence hence it shouldn't be treated lightly. But i totally dread going to the doctor and i can't overcome that inertia to knock on the doc's door. Self-medication will do this time, again.

But don't worry, just a light sore throat, cough, and flu. Should be over within a few days.

Anyway, i just read the last issue of Time and i think most of us should go get a copy and read the few articles on the power of the mind and on how scientists can't seem to fathom how the mind works. The article on consciousness especially intrigues.

Have been reading Gaarder's Solitare Mystery lately and the fiction book's brings you deep ideas of philosophy: in discovering the mysteries of the world and the greater universe and also in identifying the truth that man not only knows not much about himself, but also knows almost nothing about his surroundings and the universe. Gaarder's books most often is linked with religious explanations on the worlds' mysteries and his ideas are almost linked with God and greater beings whom he's still grappling to identify with. But because of the way the book is written, with usually great story plot and interesting philosophies, he sometimes sucks me so deep into his story that i'm almost converted to believe in some of the "scientifically-unproven" theories that he has come up with (although i'm not a "God-believer" in true sense)

However, after reading these scientific articles on man's attempts to try to explain his own thoughts, im once again brought back to closer reality (It's understandable since i'm usually not much of a philosopher myself) that we shouldn't declare that man is being foolish in thinking that he knows a lot, and in being too absorbed with himself. A lot of scientific discoveries and theories stems from philosophies that man himself came up with, and at least when man declares that he knows very little about the world, he tries to at least prove with effort that he is trying to grapple with what's closest to him: his inner state of mind and thoughts.

I don't really know what i say makes any sense, it's a bit of preliminary thinking, so all those ideas might look more like a rough sketch than a thoroughly thought out piece, but i'd just thought philosophers and scientist can actually shake hands and make friends.

Enough about the woo-ha about all these....went shopping with Jac at Vivo yesterday and snatched some bargains. I bought an S & K long sleeve top for less than 20 and it's been so long since i got something from S & K (presumably because this top didn't look as S&K, blah blah). And i bought something for less than 20 from Zara?!(Can you believe it?!)

Went King's Satay at the Cannery after that, i really love Clarke Quay's atmosphere at night:

King's Satay is famous for its.............Satay! Duh.

Murtubak was good.

The prata wih "unique" topping was good too.

Roti John was good "three".

When it comes to good food, im lost for words. Anyway, King's Satay is a must-go because no service charge no gst, hohoho.

Oh....and weiyingermei scored an 8 for the O's. Wootx, one point better than me. Now,it's time for her to be in a dilemma, S.A or no S.A?

BTW, i'm soooo soooo worried about the A's.

After the debate over this by Seow Si Min and Huang Jia Min on her tagboard, i ventured further to confirm my view that Jia Min is right.

a search on askjeeves.com gave some answers:

"The stomach needs water to digest foods, but it draws in what it needs from the rest of the body, temporarily. Also, everything you eat contains water, even meats. Fruits and vegetables are upto 90% water. Drinking liquids with meals is a matter of preference"

http://www.indiadiets.com/myths/Myth%20details/drinking_water_hinders_digestion.htm

"Boosting intake of plain water makes good sense, many experts concur, because water eases digestion and regulates the body temperature.

Water also bathes the cells and accounts for about 60% of body weight. And it can help us exercise longer and more effectively. Drinking water can ward off constipation and maybe even crankiness. And since it's a natural appetite suppressant, water can help you loose weight and keep it off it can help keep skin healthy, although it won't necessarily banish acne."

http://www.atus.net/comechk/newsbin/health/water.htm

Did random searches and all evidence indicates that water does helps digestion. Like what i remember.

Just as i posted the previous entry, i found the answer:

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is an equatorial traveling pattern of anomalous rainfall that is planetary in scale.

The MJO is characterized by an eastward progression of large regions of both enhanced and suppressed tropical rainfall, observed mainly over the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. The anomalous rainfall is usually first evident over the western Indian Ocean, and remains evident as it propagates over the very warm ocean waters of the western and central tropical Pacific. This pattern of tropical rainfall then generally becomes very nondescript as it moves over the cooler ocean waters of the eastern Pacific but reappears over the tropical Atlantic and Indian Ocean. The wet phase of enhanced convection and precipitation is followed by a dry phase where convection is suppressed. Each cycle lasts approximately 30-60 days.

The MJO is also known as the 30-60 day oscillation, 30-60 day wave, or intraseasonal oscillation.

Was reading the papers when i came across this word gubernatorial

checked Dictionary.com for the meaning and it's commonly used with the word election, like gubernatorial elections. Meaning on a executive or government scale. Like the governal elections.

Anyway, i was researching the "Julian-Madden Phenomena" closely linked with the El Nino effect or climate change. But wikipedia or dictionary has no clue as to what it is. Which means i've either spelled the phenomena wrongly or it's time i hit the library for research books. Or anyone has a clue has to how to explain this phenomena?

Was just checking the mailbox when i saw the TJC Homecoming Dinner email sent by Mrs Loke. Woo, we would be goin back i guess, but it's still a far date, so can't confirm. One thing i know, i'll definitely try to go back for the College Day celebrations because...........

Most have heard my laments about how i dread watching last year's jen and brad's The Break Up. Now you should hear about how i dread this year's The Break Out. 2007 biggest breakout, at least it's the biggest since january. I totally hate hormonal changes and draggy puberscence. When will all this come to an end?

First time i think maybe wrinkly skin would be better than big horrid zits. I'd forgo 10 yummy ice cream for porcelain skin. I'd exchange those zits for an extra 5kg anytime(ok maybe no)

Waaaaa

There might be a day i'll have three of all those, wrinkly skin, big horrid zits, and an extra 5 kg. Waaaaaa

Anyway, a conversation with Wanying over sms yesterday went like this:
Wanying: Dont tell me you dont go that one i asked you to but go for jolin concert
Me:Yah. That 1 is me and my 2 sis goin 2gether de, hee. Anywae, i decided nt 2 watch tt b4 i bought jolin tix, lol.
Wanying:You are so......!Yikes. That even more Waste money!!! ! ! ! !
Me:Noo, me like 2 see jolin dance, hoho.
Wanying: No meaning one. Boliao. Leh.

Something like that.

The reason i'm bringing this up is because i want to explain my reasons for choosing Jolin's concert over 暗恋桃花源.

The decision to watch Jolin's Mandopop concert over a Huayi play might seem like a frivolous decision, but it was more of a spontaneous personal choice than a well-thought out one, i would admit. And, guilty as charged, Ms Moon is a big fan of Mandopop, because personalities like Jay Chou and Jolin appeal to me as much as plays that have more meaning in them.

And plus, im treating my little sis to the concert and it's goin to be a fun nite out together. I cant possibly bring my sis to the chinese play, can i?

Call it goin with the flow, call it a dumb decision, call it a teenage fantasy, I'm not regretting the decision to fork out so much money for a concert tix. Because Jolin is hot and she can shake her bon-bon.Wootx.

王维 and 陶渊明 might flip in their graves if they read my entry.

Anyway, i'm signing up for the malay lessons soon.
Details:
03/04-19/06 (12 sessions)
Tues: 8-9.30pm
Fees: $70/$75 additional material cost $10
Place: Tampines North CC

Lemme know if you guys wanna join. Wanying and Simin have already expressed interest.

Some photos from yesterday's biking with JM and SM:

Ok, done.
Should go back to some reading, since my Solitaire Mystery is rottin, and i need to start hittin on my Dreams of the Red Chamber LOL

"to be truthful, i hate 18 gurls in our class when there's 27 gurls. -.-"

from weitingxiaomei's blog

im just trying to say that "WE'RE SO ALIKE"

Don't think that i look friendly and amiable, but you wouldn't know, sometimes deep down in my heart, i resent some people and some characters in my life. IT drives me bonkers trying to coexist with these people in the realm. But life's like that.

I just typed this because i read a reminder that i might have to share a little bit more of my life with this person. Anyway, i dislike someone because of trivial reasons, sometimes first impression, sometimes its what you say, sometimes its how you look like, sometimes its because of a particular incident.

You see, that's why im actually a very bad friend.

But it's easy to see who i dislike. I become quiet. I won't talk much to you. I become ms quiet moon. I behave like this alot in tj, so some of the people ive met in tjc, you don't really please me.

please be prepared, for a lot of photos.

Ms moon went back to the old company and got my 336 dollars worth of pay back. :)

A day alone is much relished, because i feel most comfortable when im with myself. Shop @ Central and walked along the river bay. Tasted Azabu sabo tiramisu ice cream blended with the river breeze. Sat down and people-watch. Did some shooting and self-shooting. I was acting like a total idiot trying to get my own shots with the compact(imagine a bunch of angmohs lookin at me quizzically).YEAH. Was a great day coupled with great pictures (though some are a bit blur)I made myself look like a stranger in a paradise, a tourist in an unknown land. :):):)

Ok, Singapore is not much of a paradise, but can suffice lah.

2 guys from Paisley and Cream came by spreadin the love with some valentine cookies. Freebie!

Sneaked around for some spontaneous portraits of strangers. Clarke Quay is so fun!

this would be nice if it was a perfect symmetry baa

looks like big plasma tv hor

Its mad, but the nerd blog is so becoming a photo log. Finally you can stereotype me as the narcissistic, self-indulgent blogger instead of the book-in-face, analytic intellectual. It gives people reason to say " Wah, she thinks she very pretty ah, put so many pictures?!?!"

But i think i very pretty leh -o- LOL. Pretty ms moon. Soo cute *pinches my own face*

Nvm, im mad. ignore me.

I very happy. I loving life. I smile all day. I like being Ms Moon. Happy New Year.

I hope you can feel the happiness surging in me, it's as if all the senses are coming alive, and you can feel every bit of you, every muscle laughing. HOHOHOHO. So im spreadin the joy......

Watched Babel and it's a sad movie. I don't know whether i like it, im confused. Because Babel is supposed to confuse. The global village where there's no language barriers makes thing confusing. :) I'd rather be confused than settle into despair because of the movie. So im confused. SOo confused.

So many sexual scenes. Not some sexual scenes.

But academy award worthy.NOD NOD.

Anyway, like jiamin, i passed that writing test. One step towards my dream. Something worth celebrating. Something worth being happy about. :):):)

But :( because the frequency at which i sun myself, if i were a cuttlefish, i would be dried and ready for packing. Psst, i went swimmin again today.

Cheers! (except for the new tan that i want to be rid of)
