联合早报关于Alfian的新闻纸只有一则，而言论版里关于377A立法的文章都写得很保守。这真正反映了华人学者的看法吗？为什么Straits Times的言论版总是比较活跃？是因为早报读者较传统吗？

We had our first lecture for Media Law and Ethics today by Prof Cherian George and Prof Pieter Aquilia. I don't understand why, but as we delve further into the practice of the media professions, the "climate of fear" heightens. One of my "before-lunch" topics with Jiamin and Jinhe was "disilusionment regarding the practice of journalism". Jinhe was recounting how one of her friends who was very passionate about being a journalist decided against it after attending the series of lectures. She said she was disillusioned by her disillusioned friend.
"Slander" and "libel" have always been in my dictionary, but I now understand the techinical definitions and the grounds for contention. Yet, this new-found knowledge isn't a form of consolation. Instead, I feel further impeded by the limitations of the pen and the paper. It seems that you can't put all your bubble thoughts on paper, someone will burst it eventually if the bubble isn't the colour he/she wants it to be. Same applies for the rest of the lectures.
Jinhe and me went for Sylvia Lim's forum on "The Constitution, Democracy and Opposition Politics" and something Jinhe said struck me quite hard.
I was trying to prove something that Prof Cherian taught in class. So I asked Jinhe: "Since this is for educational purpose, does that mean that if I blog about what Ms Sylvia Lim says, it won't be considered libel?"
And Jinhe replied: "Aiyah, don't blog about politics lah!"
Well, is that the demonstration of the legendary "climate of fear"? I don't know, it could well be an off-the-cuff remark. But seriously, we often do come across such apprehension and contemplation before we perform an act of seemingly "going against the government". Impediment on active public dialogue, I would think so.
Anyway, having not read the Singapore Constitution, I was slightly lost. Qi Min presented a really cheem question I couldn't catch. But I love Prof Ho and ...his hair. Haha. He sure has really black hair on top of that intelligent brain of his. The questioning of whether the post of Minister Mentor and Senior Minister in the Cabinet was constitutional was something new. Never thought of it before.
I've always openly supported PAP, since I find the opposition usually very wayang and incompetent in many ways. But, today's talk, well, though it didn't convert me, I was convinced that there are alternatives to PAP, and we should always provide them with the platform to voice their opinions. I do like Sylvia Lim's casual yet confident style, and she did impress me as a competent female leader. We should listen to what the opposition has to say sometimes, and make an informed decision. What do you think?
I think during the speech, she mentioned a phrase which was quite memorable, "running away with the mandate". Think hard about what it really means.
P.S: I say again, I don't think I will be a politician. Being a journalist still beats that.

Speaking of transport, the newspapers have been infiltrated with spreads after spreads of SIA A380 ads. Gosh, damn rich la. And that Genting entrepreneur Tan Sri Lee sure is influential too with unbelievable number of obituaries. Today's Straits Times was thick thick thick. They must have had a nice day at SPH, big money.
They say SIA is the way to fly, i'd say KPE is da highway to look out for! COOL.
There's a documentary on Channel NewsAsia today on the KPE named "Tunnel that moved a River". Do watch.

Jinhe and Jiamin thinks my life revolves around politics. I do agree sometimes. I got all excited when I heard that Welyon's topic for impromptu speech was "Patriotism" which is oh-so-political to me. I was more excited than nervous for my China reform presentation, though I feel that I did mess it up a bit due to lack of proper organisation. Love reading the papers, plus reading between the lines to get the political message behind quotes and speeches of leaders. Whollygosh. Labels: America's next top models, hall 9, news, school
By the way, my topic for impromptu speech was "Ambition". Now everyone knows I want to be America's Next Top Model, that I want to "strut my stuff" on the glam runway. And that my favourite pastime is prancing in my room. Another whollygosh. Nerves didn't get to me because I enjoyed babbling without second-thought.
I asked Prof Ho the meaning of scientific development, that rhetorical in the 17th Party Congress by Hu Jintao. He said it was pure political motivation, that Hu wanted an ideology people could identify with when you mention his name. This does sound logical. Suddenly I'm all interested in China. It is an interesting country to study. China's foreign correspondent, sounds good.
Just back from block supper, got a message from Junfeng. Said he forgot bout shooting for his block. Oops, now only 47 got no photos. Die. :O Donuts were delicious. Bite-size reduces the guilt.
An interesting news to share:
this is amazing and absurd. A vending machine skirt!!! It's a vending machine disguise to hide from your pursuers. LOL. Trust the jap to come up with all these quirky designs.
Though, if I was the pursuer, I'd think: "Chey, so easy to see through the ploy!!!"

Surprisingly, Jiamin's spree tendencies are like an infectious virus, and I just caught it. vaaaa...Nobody should have introduced this to me, though I knew bout all these sprees long ago, but seeing Jiamin's fingers busy at work makes mine itchin for some action too. Finally finished horrendous file transfer to Junfeng. Nothing seems to work. I tried filesend and Yousendit, but they all got stuck in the process of uploading. Hate big files. Luckily msn to the rescue, though I won't give it much credit since it's damn damn slow. Sorry, tremendously slow, i mean. (Grins at SSM)
Anyway, some worrying in the house. Coz of the dreadful Secondhand Dealers Act that's going to take effect this December, the trading business sure would be affected. Cross-cheques for all transactions is so not going to work because most of my Dad's buyers and sellers are illiterate and know nuts about cheques. Same for my Dad. It's getting really troublesome and that explains my Dad's lack of sleep lately. It's irritating to know that it's not an iron rice bowl anymore and it gets even frustrating when I recall that he's the sole breadwinner of the family. Though worse come to worse, I just become garang guni and go door to door knocking. Luckily I know how to issue a cheque. *Frowns*

it is so efficient, sometimes the news i get from ahlong is also the news i get from moon on the same day.
i think this network works because we're all kpo and big-mouthed by nature.

I slept for 1 and a half hour this afternoon. I usually only take really short naps.
This must be the most unproductive Thursdays ever. Now I'm left with only 2 more hours for work. Shucks.
Anyway, adhoc photo-taking yesterday was quite fun. I was in an energetic mood, the same cannot be said for today. But I do hope publications churn out exciting informal photos. Though today Jun Feng won't be helping me out with the shooting, hope my camera doesn't screw up again. *Cross fingers*

Sadly, we didn't get our chance to present the speech today. I say sadly, because, all of us half-wanted to get over and done with it and we deeply believe that an additional week would do little to improve the quality of our presentation. Though that's really pessimistic thinking. But the presentation is really sleek and sophisticated, just wished that I could be more natural and spontaneous in presenting my part, I'm always a little reliant on that paper. Labels: school
The Cool Clean Clan presentation was really impressive and the bubble pink, oh that bimbo colour, was really eye-catching. Cool and humorous. Really captured our attention. Our presentation is less fun. But i think we'll do good.
This week seems more relaxed. Maybe it's just the start of the week and the stress hasn't set in yet. In the holiday mood.

I told Ru Shan I caught Ang Lee's Lust, Caution this morning and she replied with "Hey, i thought CI people have to boycott that film." Ha, because of all the censorship and we're supposed to be people who embraces freedom of expression, or phrasing it in another way, people who want the right to freedom of expression. Is it a major deprivation then that we're missing out on the juicy bits (the lust parts)in the movie? I don't know. I seriously don't know. Labels: movies
Not knowing..that's because we didn't get to see whether those juicy bits were truly quality parts? It's all hearsay that we're getting from the film critics who got to see the whole thing (how unfair?!?) But, i'm really curious because, throughout the course of the movie, I found it a tad too bland, though the Shanghainese accents and the Chinese mood kind of sucked me in. Didn't like the ending though. Maybe it would be better if they showed the controversial parts, you tend to think, but I kind of doubt so. Don't blame it on the Censorship board before you get the whole picture, I guess. Maybe it was a bad movie after all. OOPs.
Some influence on Ang Lee's directing seemed to come from Alfred Hitchcock, cause I caught a glimpse of that poster for "Suspicion" in the background...if im not wrong. Classy..The suspense, the "wrong man" motive, the presence of voyeurism...a little bit must have come from Hitchcock's films.
Suddenly I'm quite interested in film. I've always been an avid movie-goer, but not the sophisticated kind. Maybe i should just start paying attention.

四面墙的禁锢总比不起心墙的封堵，讨厌往前踏一步，后来又怯懦地往后退三步的懦弱行为，但有时却控制不了自己。
总要提醒自己“自然开心”，但这种情绪只能在 CloseFriends 面前才能曝露。其它时间呢？有时是僵硬的笑容，有时是假意的微笑。这不是虚伪，只是一点的不愿意，加上很多点的无可奈何。

今天是中秋节庆祝会，月亮都缺了，月饼都吃腻了，一点中秋的感觉都没有。把庆祝中秋变成了一种义务，本来热腾腾的心也会冷却。不要把小大人当成大小人，不要玩弄别人的责任感，因为本来想去，有可能会变不想去，因为。。。。不爽！！！
